• Hi,

My name is Wilf Gerrard-Staton and welcome to my "Windows XP Slow Startup" Blog. I have provided many reasons why your Windows Operating System may be running slow. It may be one or several reasons so please have a look at each one and implement one at a time. It is important that you do not try everything at once as you need to know which one was causing the problem. May I suggest that you start by clicking here "Windows XP Slow Startup" and follow the instructions there first. Then read all about the Windows Registry File how that can have a major impact on your systems performance.

How to Disable Windows XP Services

Posted by Wilf Gerrard-Staton on November 17th, 2009

Disable Windows XP Services Procedure

To disable Windows XP Services one needs to use the following procedure, but before you disable any windows xp service you should take a note of the service you are disabling and it’s current settings.

The control panel is used to disable Windows XP services as follows:

1. Left click on “Start” then “Settings” then “Control Panel“.
2. Look for the Icon named -  “Administrative Tools” and double left click.
3. Look for the Icon named -  “Services Shortcut” and double left click on it.
4. You should now see a window with all the current services installed on your computer.

There will be a number of services that will have under the “Status” column either “Started” , “Disabled” or “Manual“.  Started or Disabled or obvious but Manual means that it is started by another procedure, program or service that requires it to be running. If the program or procedure is programmed correctly then it should put the service back into manual mode when it is finished with it.

Using the “Stopping Windows services” list, disable any of the  services that it recommends. To do this, follow this procedure:

1. Under the heading “Startup Type” Right click on the appropriate service.
2. In the menu that pops up left click on “Properties
3. A window will appear. Left click on the “Startup Type” dropdown box and select “Disabled
4. Click “Apply” then “OK
5. Repeat from  (1), for each of the services you wish to disable. Remember to note which service and the status before you disable it.
6. Reboot your system.

I would limit disabling the services to 5 at a time and no more until you are satisfied that your system is still operating OK.

If for any reason you have a problem that you may note be able to rectify you can restore you system to a previous state by doing a “Windows XP System Restore“.
